| The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, part 2. |
| What are the steps of R.C.I.A.?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) has four distinct periods: 1.Inquiry or Precatechumenate This is a time for inquiry and discernment. Inquirers are invited to reflect on God’s call in their life and their readiness to journey toward Baptism or Reception into the Catholic Church. 2.Catechumenate This is a time for nurturing faith and for learning about the teachings of the Church. Participants meet weekly for catechetical sessions and for breaking open the Word of God. 3.Purification and Enlightenment This is the time immediately preceding the celebration of the initiation sacraments at the Easter Vigil. This period coincides with the season of Lent and provides an opportunity to deepen one’s conversion, to reflect upon God’s continuing call and to celebrate special rites in preparation for the Easter sacraments. 4.Mystagogy or Postbaptismal Catechesis This is the time immediately following the reception of the Easter sacraments. During this period the new Catholics reflect more deeply on what they have experienced and how they can be more fully integrated into the life of the Church. What is meant when people refer to men and women coming into "full communion with the Church"? Coming into full communion with the Catholic Church describes the process for entrance into the Catholic Church for men and women who are baptized Christians but not Roman Catholics. These individuals make a profession of faith but they are not baptized again. To prepare for this reception, the people, who are called "candidates," usually participate in a formation program to help them understand and experience the specific teachings and practices of the Catholic Church. Some of their formation and preparation may be with catechumens preparing for baptism, but the preparation for candidates is very different since they have already been baptized and committed to Jesus Christ, and many of them have also been active members of other Christian communities. to continue click [here] |
